Compost: Rotten and Rich
Owing to a lifetime of teaching first grade, I admit to a certain guilty pleasure this year in having no children around for whom I felt obligated to toast pumpkin seeds, or now to turn the jack-o-lantern into a pie. He looks suitably handsome in the organic rubbish heap, soon to be rotten and rich compost. Is it not an equally worthy end?

Oh, he is handsome!! We don't have the carving pumpkins tradition here (wrong season) - but for me it is one of the neatest things about Halloween. I was in Chicago over Halloween one year and loved all the Jack-o-Lanterns in windows, on doorsteps...

Ooooh it is---and yes I also admit to being obsessive about adding ALL our kitchen scraps and yard debris. We avoid processed foods as much as possible---which means we generate a lot of scraps---a byproduct of "from scratch" cooking. Gotta love the magic of rot!:-). I tend my compost heaps more than the garden I think. This is actually one of five---all in different stages of decay. Moe says don't get me started on my compost heaps.
ReplyDeleteDebbie, I love my compose heaps...I have 2, and at this moment on my kitchen counter is a bowl with coffee grounds and apple cores because I didn't wander in the back yard today!
